Choosing CCTV for a Retail Environment

A retail CCTV system should be planned around the areas that need useful coverage, not simply the number of cameras. Entrances, payment points, aisles, stock rooms and external approaches can require different camera positions and image detail.

Complete bundles can simplify a new installation, while individual cameras, recorders, brackets and cables are useful when extending or maintaining an existing system.

Plan coverage before equipment

Mark entrances, tills, high-value displays, blind spots and staff-only areas on a floor plan. Camera height, angle and lighting affect whether recorded images will be useful.

Match cameras and recorder

Check the camera technology, resolution, channel capacity and connection type against the DVR or NVR. Leave spare channels if the system may be expanded later.

Estimate recording storage

Retention time depends on camera count, resolution, frame rate, recording schedule and storage capacity. Decide how much footage the business needs to retain before selecting the recorder drive.

Before you order

  • Check camera and DVR/NVR compatibility.
  • Allow spare recorder channels for expansion.

  • Review signage, privacy and data-handling duties.
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How many CCTV cameras does a shop need?

The answer depends on the layout and the views required. Plan coverage for entrances, tills, aisles, high-value stock and restricted areas, then identify overlap and blind spots.

What is the difference between a DVR and an NVR?

A DVR is generally used with compatible analogue camera systems, while an NVR records compatible network or IP cameras. Cameras, recorder and cabling must be selected as one compatible system.

How long can CCTV footage be stored?

Retention varies with storage capacity, camera count, resolution, frame rate and recording settings. A system can be sized after the required retention period is known.

Can I add cameras to an existing system?

Often, if the recorder has spare channels and supports the camera type and resolution. Check the recorder model and existing cabling first.
